Making a Difference

An old man walked up a shore littered with
thousands of starfish, beached and dying after
a storm. A young man was picking the starfish up
and flinging them back into the ocean.
“Why do you bother?” the old man scoffed.
“You’re not saving enough to make a difference.”
The young man picked up another starfish
and sent it spinning back to the water.
“Made a difference to that one,” he said.

You make a difference in your city every day!

The URMMA Summer Conference will focus on Making a Difference. For good or ill, each of us impacts our city and those we work with every day.  We hope you will join us for stimulating discussion and sharing of ideas on how you can make a positive difference in your city.

Our conference will be held at the Cedar Breaks Lodge & Spa in beautiful Brian Head. This mountain retreat will provide a quiet venue where you can enjoy vigorous activities such as hiking or mountain biking, ATV rides, and horseback riding, or simple pleasures such as relaxing at the pool, enjoying a massage at the spa or reading a book. Lodging information is included in this agenda packet.

Conference sessions includes discussions on ethics, e-discovery policies, and Leading Your City from Good to Great.

We hope you and your family will join us Wednesday evening and dinner. Our conference will conclude Thursday evening with a family dinner and closing social.

Conference Agenda

Wednesday, August 8

1:00 - 5:00 “The Bottom Line on Integrity” by Dr. Quinn McKay

Dr. McKay states that integrity begins with being honest about dishonesty. In his interactive and thought provoking presentation, Dr. McKay will address such questions as:
    * Is lying ever the right thing to do?
*What’s the difference between moral ethics and gaming ethics and when is it appropriate to use each?
    *How does pressure affect honesty?
*How can you create a climate where wrongful acts can be reported?
*How does your view of ethical behavior affect your city?

In this two-part discussion, Dr. McKay will present a practical approach to integrity and honesty with question-and-answer exercises to help you assess your own and your city’s attitude towards integrity.  His teaching style is very interactive as well as entertaining.  We promise this won’t be just another boring lecture on ethics.

5:30 Dinner

Bring your family and join us for a delicious dinner.  Enjoy the remainder of the evening on your own.

Thursday, August 9

7:30 Breakfast for conference attendees

8:00 - 10:00 “The Bottom Line on Integrity”, Part II - Dr. McKay

Dr. McKay will continue our discussion on integrity.

10:00 - 12:00  Developing an E-Discovery Policy - Panel Discussion

A recent amendment to federal rules of civil procedure now allows discovery to include electronic documents.  This includes email and other electronically generated documents. Management of this data can be overwhelming since 95% of all documents are created electronically and a vast majority of them will never become paper documents. Some of the issues the panel will address are:
    *the scope of e-discovery issues
*the form of production for discovery issues (paper vs. electronic format)
    *privilege and classification issues
    *organization of electronic documents
    *long term retention

12:00  Lunch for conference attendees

1:00 - 3:00  Leading Your City From Good to Great - Rick Horst and John Geilmann

3:15 - 4:15  Ask URMMA

This will be an open forum to ask the URMMA staff any question that’s on your mind.  Do you have a question about claims, inspections, policies, claims adjusting, finance, documents, education programs, etc...?  Some of the topics we’ve discussed in the past include the possibility of future lawsuits with the Kirby company, what cities are interested in joining URMMA, and how do recaptured losses really work, just to name a few topics. Now is your chance to ask staff anything you want to know about URMMA.

5:30 Dinner and Closing Social

Bring your family and join us for dinner, conversation and a fun time.
